Kahoot

Where learning and assessment comes alive

I've been using Kahoot for a number of years. It's fabulous for staff INSET, it's great for parent meetings and of course is incredibly valuable in the classroom.

The idea is engaging in itself - create, play and share learning games for the classroom. I mean learning should be fun and the children absolutely love challenging themselves in the games. Each game can be designed by the teacher and built quickly online. If you haven't got time to do that then simply search for something already created and adapt it for your setting.

The real key to the use of Kahoot is the information that comes out of the games. The data that you can find on each question, who got it correct, which wrong answers were selected and the time it took to answer gives you clear understanding as to which pupils are retaining information, how you need to proceed as a teacher and what may need to be adjusted in your planning. You'll get great information on misconceptions and with the self-guided nature of the quizzes you can deal with issues as they arise.

I like some of the quick-fire quizzes to just have fun with multiplication tables, take a quick survey or show your understanding of spelling. It completely changes the traditional testing into something more real and immediate for pupils. For some schools it may not replace the traditional but it will definitely enhance it.

However, it's the way it can be used with staff that takes it to a different level. Imagine finding out who really understands safeguarding issues or how people would respond to an online safety issue.

It's fun. It's fast and it's fantastic for engaging learners of all ages.
