Augmented Reality

Bringing the world to life

Augmented reality blurs the lines between the real world and the computer-generated world. There is usually a “marker” image to begin the process. This is a simple drawing, painting or sketch. When a mobile device running an augmented reality app is hovered over the image, it brings the image to life. This could be a video that plays, a picture that appears or a link to a website. You can even make a phone call through augmented reality. There are several apps available that run augmented reality. We use AR Make as a tool for creativity in teaching and learning.

You can see some examples below where students can step into the learning to explore mathematics.

Challenge

My journey with augmented reality began with a project using Aurasma. The project was inspired by a little boy called Lucas. He was visiting Canary Wharf in London and said, 'I had no idea London looked like this'. It was a wake up call for the whole school. Children were getting to the latter stages of their primary education and didn't know the city they lived in. We were failing them. So, we used augmented reality to bring it to life. The books below were published by Apple as part of their One Best Thing and should inspire everyone to bring the community to life and use augmented reality in education.
