Online Safety

"I thought the use of humour in the script a clever and thoughtful way of delivering the films dialogue"
Pete Burgis (foley artist) - Paddington 2

I have worked hard to promote e-safety in schools across the UK at conferences and through the website Betsy Bee. As a result of my efforts I was asked by Childnet to help produce the Know It All resources, Kara, Winston and the Smart Crew. You can see that contribution in the Teacher Resources talking about the importance of working with parents.

In my role at Anson Primary School I worked with Professor Tanya Byron on the Byron Review, presenting about the vision for esafety at the launch of the review period, working with children and Tanya through her research phase and was then fortunate enough to visit 10 Downing Street to talk about online safety with the Prime Minister when the review was launched.

All schools should consider online safety as a fundamental building block of digital literacy. We don’t teach our children to ride a bike by sending them straight to the roads, nor should we allow children freedom and open access the first time they are on a computer. However, we have a duty to support the children with learning in real life contexts, building an awareness of what is the correct behaviour online, what is great about the Internet and mobile technology and what to do if something goes wrong or worries them.

I continue to work on e-safety issues and have recently released the 'Is That Your' series of books, aimed at giving simple messages to children, teachers and parents about how to stay safe online. I also work with Digital Leaders on the Childnet Digital Leaders Programme to make films supporting the online safety messages. Their work has been shortlisted for national film awards. One of the most powerful ways for children to get a message across is throught the common language of film. In this film, shortlisted for a national award, the children share the story of Fin the fish and the issues he's having on the net.

Finball Wizard

Fin the Fish gets in trouble on the net and seeks help from adults he trusts.
